About the course
Web Therapy is a course designed for therapeutic professionals working with, or who will be working with adopted and fostered children/young people. Web therapy provides a robust programme of support to work with clients, parents, families and professionals.
Working with traumatised children and their families requires specialist training. Web therapy takes you through a system that will empower you to work with clients who have experienced complex trauma and parents and professionals who are caring for them.
This course will unlock the problems faced by adoptive and foster families and find solutions for them. Where normal parenting practice is failing, web therapy explores the alternative to developing positive attachment patterns with a traumatised child by focusing on building bonds of attachment between the client and parent thus increasing resilience.
An adoptive parent recently told me, “Parenting a traumatised child required specialist parenting skills. I learnt very early on that providing love and warmth was never enough. Love was often experienced as scary causing many meltdowns! This programme would have really helped me to understand how trauma had impacted on every area of my child’s development. Trauma was displayed through behaviours which many families, friends and professionals found challenging to deal with and were unable to manage, causing my child to constantly experience shame and guilt instead of feeling contained. Being an adoptive parent during these many stressful times often left us feeling inadequate, isolated, useless, exhausted and frustrated due to the systems not being adequate to support our child or us as a family. Looking at the Web-therapy programme I can see just how this programme would have enabled us as a family to parent our child from a trauma lens and if the professionals involved with my child had learned about web-therapy we may possibly have felt supported during the very tough times”.
This two day course will enhance your practice and lead to a specialisation in trauma recovery with adopted and children in care. You will discover how to work and empower the family and professionals who surround the child or young person. You will learn to use assessment tools within schools, family and therapy to identify where the focused support is required. After analysis of the assessment outcomes you will learn how to work closely with the parents of the child/young person. You will enhance your skills to liaise with teaching staff and create an environment for change within the school and much more.
After the training a comprehensive pack of resources will be received with ongoing advice and guidance from the School of Play and Creative Therapies Team.
