Workshop Aims
This experiential workshop is designed to increase participants’ confidence and competence when working with LGBTQ+ children and young people. Combining current research, lived-experience videos, reflective discussion, and creative exercises, the session will explore key concepts including gender and sexual diversity, minority stress theory, and affirmative therapeutic techniques.
Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the messages they have received about gender and sexuality, deepen their understanding of LGBTQ+ terminology, and consider practical ways to create safer, more affirming therapeutic spaces for young clients.

About the course
Children and young people who identify as LGBTQ+ often face unique challenges that can significantly impact their mental health and wellbeing. Experiences such as bullying, family rejection, discrimination, and a lack of affirming support can contribute to heightened rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicidality. On the other side of the coin, research consistently highlights the protective role of supportive relationships, community connection, and affirmative therapeutic practice.
