Unlock the Power of Geek Therapy: Engage Clients Through Their Passions
Geek Therapy® is a form of creative therapy that uses elements from geek culture like computer games, comics, Sci-fi and fantasy movies or series, tabletop games, and other fandom interests as tools or mediums.
It leverages the interests and passions of clients who identify with “geek” or “nerd” culture to engage them more deeply in therapy, making the process relatable, enjoyable, and meaningful.
In practice, it is especially effective with young people or those who feel more comfortable expressing themselves through the lens of their hobbies and interests. It blends psychology with popular culture to create a unique, client-centred approach to mental health
Course information:
- This certification course introduces participants to the Geek Therapy® Model, an affinity-based model of psychotherapy. The best way to understand each other is through what we care about. Geek Therapy teaches how to use the interests and preferences of clients and practitioners to enhance the therapeutic process.
- By becoming Geek Therapy® Certified, you’ll show the world that you’ve learned the affinity-based theory, mindset, and techniques and are committed to using Geek culture and popular media in a professional and ethical manner.
- Geek Therapy’s mission is to advocate for and teach the effective and meaningful use of popular media in therapeutic, educational, and community practice. Our organization stewards the Geek Therapy® model and its community through different educational activities, including the annual TAGGS conference and this certification course.
- This certification is designed to be accessible to all therapists, educators, and community practitioners regardless of education level and experience.
Participants will learn to:
- Identify client affinities and integrate them into treatment in a meaningful way.
- Utilize the Geek Therapy mindset statements and skills to conceptualise cases and assess key opportunities for change.
